Read my latest story, "The All-Nighter", at 52|250. The latest example of the US government funding the activities of right-wing Christianists (see also faith-based initiatives) comes from a New York times article: two annual grants to the organization Morality in Media have contributed a total of approximately $300,000 dollars to this conservative group’s crusade against material its members deem to be indecent. This money has helped to fund the website ObscenityCrimes.org and two individuals who review online material to determine whether it should be sent on to the Justice Department for prosecution. But no prosecutions have come from these referrals. Essentially, then, we have federal funds being directly given to a conservative Christian group for performing an irrelevant function. This is not about outsourcing government functions; it is about funneling money to the right wing, which gives private funders, like Philip Anschutz, that much more cash to spend on other projects.
