Read-a-thon

Read my latest story, "A Tale of Two Birthdays", at 52|250.

24-Hour Readathon ReaderDuring the last weekend of June, soon after I finish grading my students’ final exams, I will be participating in a 24-hour read-a-thon. Throughout that time, I will be posting capsule reviews, commentary, and responses to mini-challenges here, though due to timezone difficulties staying up for the duration is likely to prove especially trying.

You can help by joining in, stopping by to cheer me on, and/or donating to this year’s charity, Reading Is Fundamental.

I just hope this works out better than the read-a-thon in second grade when the teacher screamed at me because she thought that I couldn’t possibly be reading at the rate at which I was turning the pages, and then she considered her point proven when, after being reduced to tears, I couldn’t tell her what was contained in the pages I had finished. Of course, other students (incidentally from wealthier families) who were going at the same pace were never questioned.

Ugh, what a terrible experience you had with that teacher. My son’s school had one of those things where you keep track of what you read, and when you get a certain number of stars on the chart, you get prizes. He reads FAST and a LOT and since at his grade level, a chapter counted as a book (since most kids were still on picture books) he built up a lot of stars. They eventually stopped giving his prizes, and later, stopped giving his prizes, and other moms made comments about “showing off” and even “cheating.” Ugh. I think he was oblivious, but *I* felt bad. But your situation, how horrible, being yelled at in front of other kids!

Anyway, glad you’re joining us with the 24 hour read-a-thon, and rest assured there will be no shaming going on!

What is your time difference? I try to start it as early in the day as possible so a lot of people will be just getting up. But if it’ll be night where you are, that’ll be tough because you’ll be starting when you’ve been up all day. Most people do end up taking at least a small nap, so feel free to do that when you need to.

Honestly, I think that particular teacher had it out for me, though I still couldn’t say why. (A lot of these memories came up recently in the wake of the story of the autistic child who was “voted out” of his class.)

The time difference is 15 hours; I’ll probably take a nap before starting and see how it goes from there.

I haven’t entirely decided. The first floor of my apartment building here has a fairly well-stocked library consisting of books previous teachers have left behind, so I’ll probably read my way through that for a good portion of the read-a-thon.

To start with, however, I’m going to finish up the essays in Illuminations (an anthology of women’s writing about photography, edited by Liz Heron and Val Williams) and try to read the collected works of HD straight through.

hi! I’m cheering and am going around wishing everyone luck and great fun! My mini-challenge will be a new fun/strange vocab word and/or crazy run-on sentence and it starts at 6 am EST on Sunday. (I live in Massachusetts) You have a fascinating blog…
