American Terrorism

A typo in one of my poems in the Winter 2009 issue of SparkBright (warning PDF ahead) has pleased me so much that if I publish said poem in a book, I may well keep it. See if you can spot this portal of discovery.

Last Friday, an American terrorist sprayed a “chemical irritant” through a window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton into the room where infants and children were being cared for while their mothers prayed. Not only have major media outlets largely ignored the story, they also may bear some responsibility for it as major newspapers in swing states have distributed a pro-McCain advertising insert that included a DVD of the Islamophobic documentary film called Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West.

The mainstream media’s reluctance to engage in deep self-examination, especially when it poses fundamental questions about ethics and income, has combined with the broader social tendency to disregard crimes against non-white people. Together these factors have combined to bury an important story, one that reveals a troubling trend of hate pushed by neoconservatives and their ilk.
