Read my latest flash, Venison, at 52|250. This year, for the first time, I saw the fireworks around the Space Needle in person; I watched the show with someone very important to me (which is what, or rather I should say who, has kept me mostly offline the last few days). Being with him has helped me to see that being happy isn’t about ignoring all the horrible things happening in the world or about being complacent. You can be happy and rage at the same time. At least, we can. Leaving him at the airport yesterday was harder even than getting home again in the two inches of snow that fell while we were inside. I had been able to tell from a glance at his boarding pass that he wouldn’t receive an extra going-over, so we waited until 45-minutes before he had to board to say goodbye, wishing that useless paranoia wouldn’t keep me from accompanying him to the gate.
