Thursday Read Write Poem

Read my latest story, "The All-Nighter", at 52|250.

Grace

sleeping on her signature she became a beam
fallen on the eighteenth floor a mote
among motes that rust & threaten toes
of explorers, hips and hearts of dreamers
sleeping on the grey-rot boards
                          she became a splinter
sect) broken at knees & neck
        to curl from the tweezers

and when the boots & gloves went home
or to tetanus prevention waiting rooms)

she saw the light rise & set
           and golden all its angles

not as a flare in a full glass eye
zoom or wide)
not as a second to capture, print or pixel
but on & on & onto night

written in response to read write prompt #107: lighting the way

This is my first time reading your work, Elizabeth. I don’t know what your other writing is like, but this one suggests a daringly orignal poetic mind. You’ve given this character, if indeed it is just one person, a wealth of color and description! I’m sure it could be read and understood in various ways, but I saw a woman in a hospital bed on the brink of entering eternity.

    Beautiful, Elizabeth!

Motes and rust and grey rot and splinters and tetanus prevention and glass eyes… all molded powerfully into an image of grace. Wonderful!

she saw the light rise & set
    and golden all its angles
    … on & on & onto night

    Impressive!

wonderful images and I enjoy the way one phrase floats into the next — especially splinter/sect and eye/zoom.

and I love that you saw a woman in the photo.

    happy new year!

I enjoyed reading this expressive insight into moments of a life, maybe about to end or begin; it sparkles! Thank you for sharing this. I hope the coming year has many golden angles of light and peace, but most of all, love!

And a bright new year to you, too
I like the “golden all its angles” and the not-photo aspects -zoom -wide -pixel etc

those open parenteses have an interesting effect

I love how you play with the multiple meanings of words the words in this piece, refracted like a beam of light. And what a great last line.
